The Umpires

During the 1920s there were so many attacks on umpires that The Sporting News classified the disruptive fane as, "born of foreign parents and high-pitched emotionally."

The Kansas City Cowboys (a defunct National League team from 1886) had a sign in their ballpark that read: "Please do not shoot the umpire. He's doing the best he can."

Did you know that General Electric once developed and tested (Spring Training 1973) an electronic ball and strike device for use by umpires?
