During the first Major League season (1876) there were eighty-three right handed Major League ballplayers and twelve left handed Major League players. Those inaugural lefties were Bob Addy, George Hall, Jimmy Hallinan, Bill Harbridge, Dick Higham, John Mullen, Tim Murnane, Lip Pike, Billy Redmon, Joe Start, Deacon White and Tom York.

One-thousand one-hundred thirty-seven switch hitters (hover over the pie chart to see the totals) are included on the baseball chart above. Who do you believe was the best switch hitter ever? Share your opinions on Baseball Fever with other serious baseball fans.

Why are there players listed without a known batting stance? Because baseball history is an ever evolving field of study and early baseball history had record keeping practices that left much to be desired.
