Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Clay credited his quick release more than his arm strength. 'Every instant, every split second counted. Facing somebody like Maury Wills, I thought, what do I have to do to cut him down? It was always going to be a bang-bang play anyway. Grab the ball and don’t look for the seam -- get rid of it. It was almost a sidearm throw sometimes.'" - Costello, Rory. Baseball Historian. Did you know that Clay Dalrymple caught 48.8% of the baserunners who attempted to steal a base when he was behind the plate catching, the second best caught stealing percentage in Major League history, behind hall of famer Roy Campanella?

Clay Dalrymple took part in eleven double plays in 1962, tied (with Johnny Edwards) for most by a National League catcher during the season. A year later, both backstops took part in sixteen double plays, tying for most by a National League catcher once again. It was, and remains, the only back-to-back seasons (1962-1963) in baseball history where the same two catchers each tied to lead the league in double plays.

Clay Dalrymple was not the first Philadelphia Phillies catcher to lead the senior circuit in double plays, joining Jack Clements (1891), Ed McFarland (1899), Red Dooin (1904, 1908), Fred Jacklitsch (1907), Bill Killefer (1913, 1917), Bert Adams (1919), Spud Davis (1932), Bill Atwood (1938), Bennie Warren (1941), Andy Seminick (1946) and Stan Lopata (1956), but he was the first - and still the only - Phillies catcher to turn the most double plays during a season in consecutive seasons.

Philadelphia Phillies Manager (1960-1968) Gene Mauch — a skipper who stressed defense and pitching — once said, "I place a premium on a thinking catcher," and Clay fit that bill nicely, finishing top five in putouts four seasons, assists four seasons, fielding percentage five seasons, double plays six seasons, and caught stealing percentage six seasons.
