Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"The pitching has been most disappointing to date, but with Tom Acker, a fireballing right hander who Schulz had at Tulsa last summer, due to join the club in Atlanta, a big improvement is expected." - Staff Writer Raymond Johnson in The Tennessean (04/18/1955, Acker Should Bolster Disappointing Mound Staff, Page 17)

Thomas James Acker was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Cincinnati Redlegs (1956-1958) and Cincinnati Reds (1959). Tom, his nickname, was born in New Jersey, birthplace for 400+ ballplayers, and Acker is first among them, alphabetically.

Tom Acker was signed directly out of Fair Lawn High School by the New York Giants, in 1948. The big righthander played minor league baseball (33 wins / 29 losses) until 1952, when he called to serve in the United States military during the Korean War. Two years later, he returned to the mound, spent only two more years in the minors, before being called up to the Reds in 1956.
