When Joe, his nickname, made his big league debut on April 8, 2001, he became the first former student from St. Mary's High School (St. Mary's, PA) to play in the majors.

Joe Beimel was not the first Duquesne University student to reach or play in the majors, but he was the first former Duke ever selected in a baseball draft (1998). After a terrific Spring Training, Beimel made the Opening Day roster with the 2001 Pittsburgh Pirates, one of only two rookies on the team at that time. What rookie infielder was also on the team on Opening Day? [Answer]

Joe Beimel was released by the Bucs on March 31, 2004, then eventually signed by the Devil Rays later that same year. When he took the mound for Tampa on July 6, 2005, he became their first player in franchise history to wear #97 during a regular season game. The very next season, when he took the mound for Los Angeles on May 1, 2006, he became the first Dodger to also wear #97 during a regular season game. The number #97 was worn by Beimel because it is his first son's (Drew Beimel) year of birth.

In 2003, Tom Martin became the first left-handed pitcher in Dodgers franchise history to pitch in 80-or-more games. Why mention this here? Joe Beimel broke that mark in 2003, pitching in eighty-three games, and setting a still-standing team record for most pitching appearances during a single season by a left-handed pitcher. Beimel wrapped up his big league career in 2015, appearing in 676 games, with six different teams, while striking out 379 hitters, across 680 innings of work. A middle relief specialist, he successfully held the lead for his teammates one-hundred eleven times!
