Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"On this date in 1930, the Robins split a boisterous double-header with the Cubs at Ebbets Field, losing 6-4 and winning 5-3. The crowd in excess of 30,000 overflowed the stands and circled the diamond. In the first game, Del Bissonette tried to stretch a triple into an inside-the-park home run, and as he slid into home plate, knocked himself unconscious by hitting his head on the plate. Many in the stands blamed Cubs catcher Gabby Hartnett for Bissonette's injury and threw bottles at Hartnett." - Snyder, John. Author. 365 Oddball Days in Dodgers History. Delphia Louis Bissonette was a Major League Baseball player with the Brooklyn Robins (1928-1931) and Brooklyn Dodgers (1933). Did you know that Del, his nickname, on April 21, 1930, became the first player in major league history to hit a bases-loaded triple AND a grand slam in the same game? Too easy? Did you know he was inducted into the Buffalo Bison Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986?

Buffalo Bison Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque

Bissonette played only one year in a Buffalo uniform but it was arguably the greatest offensive season in Bisons history.

In 1927, Bissonette batted .365, with 31 homers, 167 RBI, 229 hits, 168 runs, 46 doubles, and 20 triples. He led the Bisons in all three triple crown categories and topped all International League hitters with his 167 RBI. The triples and RBI totals still stand as Bisons all-time records for a single season.

The 1927 Bisons won 112 games and an International League pennant.

Bissonette played five years in the Major Leagues, all with Brooklyn, and hit 66 home runs in 604 career games.

If one event in baseball signifies true respect, it has to be an intentional walk with the bases loaded [Box] — Del Bissonette is one of the few in history in that "club" and details of the event are in the Intentional Bases On Balls Record Book (Click Link / See Fast fact #2).

"The Dodgers have Del Bissonette;
No meal has he ever missed yet;
The question that rises
Is one that surprises:
Who paid for all Del Bissonette?"
— L. H. Addington

The limerick above appeared in the Fireside Book of Baseball and immortalized Bissonette who died at 72 in Augusta, Maine, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound (see obituary below).
