Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"There is nothing left in there, it’s just a shredded mess. I left my arm on the mound at the Coliseum, and I'm OK with that. I wasn’t in a position to repeat my delivery, to pitch with any intention. That’s OK, I understood the odds I was facing. You have to face your mortality one day, and I have been so blessed in this game. If I take 10 minutes to be hacked off about it, it would be nine minutes too long." - Dallas Braden in The San Francisco Chronicle (Susan Slusser, Ex-A's pitcher Dallas Braden says he is hanging it up, 01/14/2014)

On Father's Day, June 21, 1964, Jim Bunning completed the seventh perfect game in Major League Baseball history. Why mention that here? Because Dallas Braden is a former Major League player who pitched for the Oakland Athletics, from 2007 through 2011, and on Mother's Day, May 9, 2010, he completed the nineteenth perfect game in Major League history! Here is a look at all 27 historic outs!

"It is true. I had a terrible hangover," said Dallas Braden, to Baseball Almanac. "My mom died when I was in high school. I miss her every day. I never drink before starts, but the next day was Mother's Day, and I did. So much that the next day my grandmother found me still in bed when I was supposed to be driving to Coliseum. She simply got back in her car and drove to the Coliseum."

Dallas Braden said in the post game press conference that it was, "Pretty cool. I don't know what to think about it just yet. There’s definitely a select group. I'd like to have a career more than today." At that point in his career, Braden did not have a single complete game — this was his first — and only seventeen career wins, the second fewest by any pitcher with a perfect game! Do you know what pitcher had only one win before they tossed a perfecto? [Answer]

On April 22, 2010, Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano popped up a Dallas Braden pitch that was ruled foul. Alex Rodriguez was on first base at the time, took off on contact, and nearing third when it was ruled foul. A-Rod trotted back to first and chose to stroll directly across the pitcher's mound. Braden yelled, "Get off my fucking mound!"

After the game Dallas said, "That is like me coming to get a ball from the umpire after a foul ball and then digging in to your batter's box."

Alex Rodriguez commented, "He just told me to get off his mound. That was a little surprising. I've never quite heard that—especially from a guy that has a handful of wins in his career."

Dallas countered, "They (the New York Yankees) are an extremely classy organization with guys who always tend to do the right thing every time; it's kind of disheartening to see that not show through or be reflected by somebody of his (Alex Rodriguez) status. He's a tremendous player and a tremendous talent, and I don't care if I'm Cy Young or the twenty-fifth man on a roster; if I've got the ball in my hand and I'm out there on that mound, that's not your mound. You want to run across the mound? Go run laps in the bullpen. That's my mound."

It all seemed to end until the perfect game a few weeks later. When it was completed, Braden's grandmother, Peggy Lindsey, had an incredibly touching moment on the mound with Dallas. She quipped, "Stick it, A-Rod" and here is what happened next:
