Ernie Broglio was born on Tuesday, August 27, 1935, in Berkeley, California. Broglio was 23 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 11, 1959, with the St. Louis Cardinals. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Ernie Broglio baseball stats page.
"St. Louis is a great city. I respected those baseball fans tremendously. When I was there, they were coming from Tennessee, they would travel hours and hours, and then go back to their job on Monday. And I would just sit there and think about all these people, how they would trade. And that respect for the organization, I don't know if it had to do with Stan Musial or the Gas House Gang or what, but I just believe that the people brought out a lot of what we did on the field." - Ernie Broglio in Game of My Life St. Louis Cardinals: Memorable Stories of Cardinals Baseball (Matthew Leach, Sports Publishing, 11/21/2011, Ernie Broglio, Page 75)

Ernie Broglio Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Ernest Gilbert Broglio was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals (1959-1964) and Chicago Cubs (1964-1966). When Ernie, his nickname, made his big league debut on April 11, 1959, he became the first El Cerrito High School (El Cerrito, CA) graduate to play in the majors, narrowly beating out Pumpsie Green, who made his debut on July 21, 1959!
Did you know that when Ernie Broglio led the National League in wins (21) in 1960, he actually tied a future hall of famer? Do you know what Milwaukee Braves lefty also had 21 wins that year? [Answer]
Did you know that Ernie Broglio was traded by the St. Louis Cardinals with Bobby Shantz and Doug Clemens to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Lou Brock, Jack Spring and Paul Toth? Baseball historians will debate lopsided traded in baseball history, and often cite this one as an example.
However, when the Cubbies traded Brock he was batting .251 at the time, with ten steals, and two homers. They were getting a young righty who had a twenty-win season, and finished the year prior 18-8 with a 2.99 ERA.
Brock did catch fire, hitting .348 for the remainder of the season, stealing 33 bases, and helping his team win the National League pennant that same year. He would go on to become and eight-time stolen base champion, the all-time leader in stolen bases (since broken) and he hit over .300 seven times on his way to the Hall of Fame. Broglio, on the other hand, went 7-19 with the Cubs while in Chicago, never struck out more than 50 batters, and retired after the 1966 season (6.35 ERA).
