Richard Matthew Burwell was a Major League Baseball player with the Chicago Cubs (1960-1961). When Dick, his nickname, made it to the majors on September 13, 1960, he was the first pitcher from the city of Alton (Illinois) to reach the majors, joining two position players, third baseman Arch Reilly (1917) and left fielder Don Lenhardt (1950).
When Dick Burwell, pictured below, made his Major League debut on September 13, 1960, it was the first and only start of his big league career. That day, Burwell pitched five innings, gave up six runs on six hits, but didn't get a single strikeout. Ten days later (on September 23, 1960), pitching in relief, Dick struckout Julian Javier to end the inning and record the first and only strikeout in his big league career.
