Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"During the early 1990s, the Astros utility infielder was Casey Candaele. When Casey filled in at short, he did just fine. He played second base about as well as anyone. I had no doubt he could play third base well, too. At one point, when Ken Caminiti was injured, Casey had to play third for about a month. He started slowly, making a few errors, and never got much better. I asked him what was so tough about it and said it was the angle. 'When I play short,' he said, 'I see the pitch and the hitter's reaction to it. It seems like I have a lot of time to decide how to play a ground ball. It's the same at second base. But when I play third, I don't get a good look at the pitch because I'm standing off to the side of it. It's all reactions and I don't always make the right decision. I never thought it owuld be that hard to play third, but it has been.'" - Dierker, Larry. Houston Astros Manager. My Team: Choosing My Dream Team from My Forty Years in Baseball. Simon & Schuster. 28 June 2007. Page 72.

Casey Todd Candaele was a Major League Baseball player with the Montreal Expos (19861988), Houston Astros (19881993), and Cleveland Indians (19961997). Despite being undrafted out of Lompoc High School (Lompoc, California) and the University of Arizona, Casey made it to the majors on June 5, 1986, where he then spent nine years without a set position, impressing managers, teammates, and the media with his hustle and ability to play virtually anywhere on the field.

Helen Callaghan was one of the all-time great players in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, stealing 419 bases in 495 games! Why did we mention this here? Callaghan was born Helen Callaghan Candaele St. Aubin, the mother to five sons, including Casey Candaele, making them the only mother / son combination in the history of professional baseball. Alyson Footer, a MLB Staff Writer, once asked Casey if he got his athletic ability from his mom to which he replied, "No, I got it from my dad. If I got it from my mom, I'd be in the Hall of Fame." On May 20, 1978, Willie Stargell hit the longest home run in the history of Stade Olympique. The 535-foot rocket was "one of the most awesome things I have ever seen in my life" according to Rudy May, an Expos pitcher who witnessed the homer from the bullpen. The Expos painted the seat Pirate-yellow, to commemorate the feat. Why mention this here? When Casey Candaele hit his first home run on July 19, 1987, it narrowly cleared the fence at the shortest distance in Stade Olympique, landing in the first row of seats. The Expos painted that seat red, to "commemorate" the shortest home run ever hit in Stade Olympique history!

Casey Candaele played professionally for fifteen years; 1,339 minor league games with ten different teams. He then worked as a minor league infield coach, a baserunning coordinator, a field coordinately, a first base coach, and a minor league manager. The lessons he passed down were truly influenced by his upbringing, "My mom taught me don't let anybody outwork you. There were numerous times throughout my career where there were players that were better than me and more talented than me, but maybe didn't work as hard. I surpassed them and got an opportunity to play in the big leagues. I say a lot that if players that had all that talent would have played as hard as I did, I might not have gotten an opportunity to play in the big leagues. So, for me, it was what drove me and what I felt was a big part of my success."
