Bill Carrigan was born on Monday, October 22, 1883, in Lewiston, Maine. Carrigan was 22 years old when he broke into the big leagues on July 7, 1906, with the Boston Americans. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Bill Carrigan baseball stats page.
"An excellent defensive catcher who provided the Boston Red Sox with above-average offense for his position, Bill 'Rough' Carrigan batted .257 in 709 career games, and once finished as high as eighth in the American League in batting average. Behind the plate, the 5-foot-9 175-pounder compensated for his lack of size with sheer toughness. Confrontational by nature, Carrigan rarely backed down from a fight, and usually came out on the better end of his many scraps. From 1913 to 1916, Carrigan was one of the most successful player-managers of the Deadball Era, piloting the Red Sox to back-to-back world championships in 1915 and 1916. After the latter season, the 32-year-old Carrigan, whom Babe Ruth later called the best manager he ever played for, walked away from the game to spend time with family and his business." - Armour, Mark. William Francis Carrigan was a Major League Baseball player with the Boston Americans (1906) and Boston Red Sox (1908-1916). When Bill, his nickname, made his big league debut on July 7, 1906, he became the first Lewiston High School (Lewiston, Maine) graduate to play in the majors!
On July 29, 1911, Bill Carrigan was behind the plate when Boston Red Sox righty Joe Wood tossed a no-hitter. On June 21, 1916, Bill was behind the plate when Red Sox righty Rube Foster tossed a no-hitter. And, on August 30, 1916, Bill was behind the plate when Red Sox lefty Dutch Leonard tossed a no-hitter — making Carrigan the first catcher in American League history to appear behind the plate in three no-hitters!
