Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"In '49 I managed El Paso in the Arizona-Texas League. We finished second and won the playoffs. A few weeks later I ran into the ballclub's owner, Jack Corbett, on the street and he asked me, 'Where are you going to manage next year?' I told him here in El Paso and he said, 'No, you’re not, I've got a new guy.' That’s how I found out that I wasn’t coming back." - Cohen, Syd. El Paso Herald-Post. Ciccarelli, Pete. Staff Writer. 28 June 1973.

Sydney Harry Cohen was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Washington Senators (1934, 1936-1937). In 2019, Cohen Stadium (9700 Gateway North Boulevard, El Paso, Texas) was demolished to make way for the Cohen Entertainment District, which features a water park, shopping, and restaurants. Why mention this here? Cohen Stadium was named for Syd Cohen and his brother, Andy Cohen, a big league second baseman, who both grew up in El Paso!

On September 29, 1934, Babe Ruth hit his seven-hundred eighth career home, the last while wearing a New York Yankees uniform. The pitcher that day was Syd Cohen, who surrendered eleven hits, and five earned runs, but also recorded his first career win! Syd never appeared on a regularly issued baseball card, but was featured in a team-issued press photo during his last big league season:
