Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"With the Cubs, Cuyler teamed with Hack Wilson and Riggs Stephenson to form one of the best hitting-outfield combinations of all time. Yet Cuyler remained aloof. 'He was a loner,' observed shortstop Woody English. 'He kept to himself. He liked to dance, and he'd go out, never palled around with a single player on the club. They didn't really dislike him, but he wasn't one of the boys.'" - Cava, Pete. Author. Tales From the Cubs Dugout. Sports Masters Publishing. 4 August 2000. Page 69.

In 1925, Kiki Cuyler hit .357 with eighteen home runs and one-hundred two RBI - his Pirates won the World Series that year, the only time in his career Kiki would be part of a World Championship team. In 1927, Cuyler was benched for nearly half the season because of a dispute with first-year manager Donie Bush (who had Clyde Barnhart take over Cuyler's post when he was out injured then refused to start Cuyler after he returned to the active roster). The Pirates again went to the World Series, but Cuyler did not play. That November, Cuyler was traded to the Chicago Cubs for Sparky Adams and Pete Scott.

Kiki Cuyler | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 1968 (HOF)

Kiki Cuyler's Hall of Fame plaque mentions his batting average in 1924 (.354), 1925 (.357), 1929 (.360) and 1930 (.355), but did you know he did not win a National League batting title any of those years, finishing fourth in 1924 (Top 25), fourth in 1925 (Top 25), sixth in 1929 (Top 25), and ninth in 1930 (Top 25)? Did you know that KI Cuyler's Sports Bar & Grill in Harrisville, Michigan was named in honor of Kiki, owned by his son Harold, and remained in business until it burned down on November 30, 2018?

Baseball Almanac Research Library

Kiki Cuyler was a devout Catholic who often made the sign of the cross prior to stepping into the batter's box, a rare sight during the 1920s and 1930, but didn't need devine assistance on the basepaths as he led the league in stolen bases in 1926, 1928, 1929 & 1930.
