Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I was pitching one day when my glasses clouded up on me. I took them off to polish them. When I looked up to the plate, I saw Jimmie Foxx. The sight of him terrified me so much that I haven't been able to wear glasses since." - Gomez, Lefty. The Story of the Oakland Athletics. Pueschner, Gordon. Author. James Emory Foxx was a Major League Baseball player with the Philadelphia Athletics (1925-1935), Boston Red Sox (1936-1942), Chicago Cubs (1942, 1944), and Philadelphia Phillies (1945). When Jimmie (sometimes spelled Jimmy), his nickname, hit .356 in 1933, he also crushed 48 home runs and collected 163 RBI, becoming the first American League player to win a Most Valuable Player Award during a Triple Crown!

JIMMIE FOXX ROOKIE CARD

Jimmie Foxx Rookie Card | 1933 Goudey Baseball Card (#29 | Checklist)
Baseball Almanac Research Library

Did you know that Jimmie Foxx is one of only five ballplayers (Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Ken Griffey, Jr. & Manny Ramirez are the other four) in Major League history to hit at least two-hundred career home runs with two different ballclubs?

What do Jimmie Foxx, Doc Cramer & Kirby Puckett have in common? There are the only three American League players in history to have more than one six-hit game (each had two) during their career! A breakdown appears below:

Jimmie Foxx
Philadelphia Athletics vs. Washington Senators, 05-30-1930 (13 innings)
Philadelphia Athletics at Cleveland Indians, 07-10-1932 (18 innings)

Doc Cramer
Philadelphia Athletics at Chicago White Sox, 06-20-1932
Philadelphia Athletics vs. Detroit Tigers, 07-13-1935

Kirby Puckett
Minnesota Twins at Milwaukee Brewers, 08-30-1987
Minnesota Twins vs. Texas Rangers, 05-23-1991 (11 innings)

JIMMIE FOXX HALL OF FAME PLAQUE

Jimmie Foxx | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 1951 (HOF)

Jimmie Foxx was one of the greatest hitters in baseball history — the first player to ever win three MVP Awards, just the second player to enter the 500 Home Runs Club (joining Babe Ruth), and at the time of his retirement, he held more than a dozen major league records. However, when his name first appeared on the Hall of Fame ballot (1936), only 9.3% of the writers agreed. In 1947, he received less votes (6.2%), and it took until 1951 before he was sent to Cooperstown, appearing at that point on (only) 79.2% of the ballots!
