Joe Girardi Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Joe Girardi, after hanging up his tools of ignorance, became the eighth manager of the Florida Marlins (2006-2006) and then the thirty-second manager of the New York Yankees (2008-today). Girardi won the Manager of the Year in his only season managing the Marlins, the only manager to win the award at the helm of a team with a losing record.
Did you know that Joe Girardi was behind the plate catching on April 5, 1993, in Shea Stadium, for the Colorado Rockies (who lost 0-3 to the New York Mets) - their first regular season game ever, making Girardi the first catcher in team history? When the first home game was played by the Rockies, on April 9th, in Mile High Stadium, Girardi was behind the plate that day as well.
Originally drafted in 1986 by the Chicago Cubs, Joe Girardi was taken in the 1992 expansion draft by the Colorado Rockies with their tenth pick overall, the first catcher they ever drafted. Players taken by the Rockies before Girardi were: David Nied (RHP), Charlie Hayes (3B), Darren Holmes (RHP), Jerald Clark (OF), Kevin Reimer (OF), Eric Young (2B), Jody Reed (2B), Scott Aldred (LHP), and Alex Cole (OF).
Joe Girardi caught two no-hitters in the big leagues, both with the New York Yankees, the first was thrown by Dwight Gooden on May 14, 1996, the second, which was a perfect game, was thrown by David Cone on July 18, 1999.
