Harvey Haddix was born on Friday, September 18, 1925, in Medway, Ohio. Haddix was 26 years old when he broke into the big leagues on August 20, 1952, with the St. Louis Cardinals. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Harvey Haddix baseball stats page.
"Every once in a while a little guy squeezes in among the giants and shows he can play baseball, too. Such was the case with the diminutive Harvey Haddix, a wee left-hander who stood just five-feet, nine-inches, weighed a mere 160 pounds and in his early days was often mistaken for being a batboy. Haddix, whose nickname was 'The Kitten,' was no pussycat on the mound. In his first full year in the majors, 1953, he won 20 games. He won 18 the following year, and was in double figures six other times." - Westcott, Rich. Author No-Hitters: Harvey Haddix. McFarland Publishing. 15 February 2000. Page 195.

Harvey Haddix was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals (1952-1956), Philadelphia Phillies (1956-1957), Cincinnati Redlegs (1958), Pittsburgh Pirates (1959-1963), and Baltimore Orioles (1964-1965). Nicknamed "The Kitten" due to his resemblance to Harry Brecheen (The Cat), Haddix is often remembered for taking a perfect game into the 13th inning, but losing.
Harvey Haddix was the starting (and winning) pitcher in Game 5 of the 1960 World Series as well as the winning pitcher in Game 7 of that same Fall Classic — an incredibly memorable Pittsburgh Pirates World Championship over the New York Yankees, recorded in the Baseball Almanac after Bill Mazeroski hit a walk-off home run (off Ralph Terry) in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Did you know that Harvey Haddix, along with Hank Aaron, won a Player of the Month Award in May 1959? Harvey earned his hardware that month by winning three games, striking out forty hitters, and losing one of the most famous games ever pitched in baseball history:

Harvey Haddix "Perfect Game" (Traditional Box Score / Enhanced Box Score)
One of the two greatest games ever pitched (the other was by Don Larsen) was hurled by Pittsburgh's little Harvey Haddix on Tuesday, May 26, at Milwaukee County Stadium. Haddix had joined the Pirates that winter in a blockbuster trade with the Reds.
The 33-year-old Haddix carried a 2-3 record to the mound for the third place Bucs. His opponent for the first place Milwaukee Braves was Lew Burdette, who would pitch a no-hitter himself in 1960. Some 19,194 were in attendance to see Haddix make baseball history.
He did it by pitching 12 perfect innings, the longest hitless game ever hurled. Unfortunately, Haddix lost not only the no-hitter, but the game itself in the 13th inning on a controversial home run by Joe Adcock that turned out not to be a home run.
The little lefty, suffering from a bad cold, mixed a baffling assortment of fastballs and sliders to set down the hard-hitting Braves. Haddix, who struck out eight, had retired 36 batters in a row entering the 13th, an all-time record.
He began the game by getting Johnny O'Brien on a ground out to short, Eddie Mathews on a liner to first, and Hank Aaron on a fly to center. The Braves hit five more balls over the next four innings, but none came close to being a safety.
Haddix didn't strike out two men in the same inning until the ninth, when he fanned Andy Pafko and Burdette for the third time, around a fly to left by Johnny Logan. Burdette was Haddix's final strikeout victim of the game.
In the fatal 13th, Felix Mantilla, batting for the first time, led off the inning, and hit a bouncer to third where Don Hoak fielded it, but threw wildly to first. That broke up the perfect game. But Haddix still had his no-hitter as Mathews bunted Mantilla to second. Aaron was then intentionally walked.
Now, Haddix faced Adcock, and the powerful first baseman slammed the second pitch over the right field fence for an apparent three run home run. But Aaron, thinking the ball had not cleared the fence, touched second and then began to trot back to the dugout. Meanwhile, Adcock raced to third. At the urging of their teammates, Aaron and Adcock returned to their bases and then scored.
No one knew the final score. It took until the next day for the National League President Warren Giles to declare the Braves the winners by a 1-0 count, ruling that Adcock was automatically out for passing Aaron and was credited with only a double, and that Mantilla's run was the only one that counted.
It was a heartbreaking loss for Haddix. His Bucs had managed 12 hits off Burdette, but only two of them had gotten as far as third, once when they loaded the bases with two outs in the third and once on a first-and-third situation with two outs in the ninth.

In 1958, Harvey Haddix won a Gold Glove Award — historical because it also happened to be the first Gold Glove ever awarded to a National League pitcher, and the first ever won by a Pittsburgh Pirate, at ANY position! The Kitty won again in 1959, making him the first Senior Circuit pitcher to win consecutive Gold Gloves, and again in 1960, the first with three-in-a-row!
