Eisler Liván Hernández was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Florida Marlins (1996-1999), San Francisco Giants (1999-2002), Montreal Expos (2003-2004), Washington Nationals (2005–2006), Arizona Diamondbacks (2006-2007), Minnesota Twins (2008), Colorado Rockies (2008), New York Mets (2009), Washington Nationals (2009-2011), Atlanta Braves (2012), and Milwaukee Brewers (2012). When Livan was originally signed by the Marlins, on January 13, 1996, it was a guaranteed $4.5 million dollar contract, with $1.5 million in additional incentives, and a $2.5 million signing bonus — the most ever for an amateur baseball player at that point in baseball history!

However, Livan did have a few "big game experiences" (non-Major League Baseball) prior to that day, including a 1992 World Junior Championship, a 1993 World Junior Championship title with Cuba, followed by a gold medal win during the 1994 Baseball World Cup.

On October 2, 2004, the Montreal Expos defeated the New York Mets 6-3, the last win recorded by the Expos (they relocated and became the Washington Nationals in 2005). Livan Hernandez was the starting pitcher, leaving the fielding after seven solid innings, and a 3-2 lead, but the bullpen surrendered a game-tying run in the eighth. Montreal jumped ahead in the ninth, Chad Cordero received the final win, and Gary Majewski the final save.
