Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I think a lot of people gave up on me. I had something to prove to myself, being sent down (in 1982). I gave myself a kick in the fanny. It's an incentive when somebody says nobody wants you. I've matured a lot, and the things that bothered me before don't know. I'm very happy, and i've learned that baseball is a fun game." - Hood, Don. Hood helps KC blank Tribe. The News-Messenger. AP News Wire. 12 August 1982. Page 13.

Don Hood was a first round draft pick out of high school, selected seventeenth overall in the 1969 Baseball Draft, and the first left-handed pitcher ever chosen during the first round by the Baltimore Orioles! First round Orioles' picks who preceded Hood; Scott McDonald (1965 / RHP), Ted Parks (1966 / SS), Bobby Grich (1967 / SS), and Junior Kennedy (1968 / SS).

During a phone interview with Baseball Almanac, Hood was not aware of that trivial detail, and being selected in the first round wasn't one of his favorite memories, but he did say, "Ending my rookie year with a complete game shutout (September 26, 1973), in Memorial Stadium, felt, um, incredible. I knew I had done my job that day!"

The Associated Press wrote: Rookie Don Hood handcuffs Detroit. BALTIMORE (AP) – Rookie left-hander Don Hood hurled a two-hitter, pitching the playoff-bound Baltimore Orioles to a 4-0 triumph over the Detroit Tigers for their sixth straight victory. Hood, 3-2, who had never before pitched a complete game in the majors, allowed a leadoff single to Tony Taylor, then kept the Tigers hitless through the sixth. Willie Horton had the other Detroit hit in the seventh. Paul Blair drove in two of the Orioles' runs with a triple and a single. Tommy Davis increased his team-leading RBI total to 89 by driving in a run on an infield out. Mickey Lolich, 16-15, moved ahead of retired pitching star Early Wynn on the all-time major league strikeout list when he recorded his sixth strikeout of the game in the fifth inning. Lolich now stands 13th with 2,338 strikeouts.

Did you know that after hanging up his cleats, Don Hood worked as a Park Ranger in Lee County, Florida? On Saturday, June 10, 2023, Don Hood passed away. He was 73 years old.
