Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Somebody once referred to reliever Doug Jones as 'the Sultan of Slow,' and the nickname might be a good description of the closer who, for 16 seasons, tied Major League hitters in knots with changeups that were slow, slower and slowest. 'Jones threw the screwball in 1985 and '86, but he didn't throw it more than once in a while the rest of his career,' wrote Bill James and Rob Neyer in their book, The Neyer/James Guide to Pitchers. 'His stock in trade was keeping hitters off stride with slow, slower, and even slower changeups.' And Jones did that well, too. His performance as a closer led Jones to record 303 saves and earned him selection to the All-Star team five times in his career. Now, that career has put Jones within a step of immortality." - Hill, Justice B. MLB Staff Writer. Closer Jones eligible for Hall of Fame. 1 January 2006.

Dave Smith was the first Houston Astros closer to put together a 30+ save season, finishing the 1986 campaign with 33 saves. Six years later, Doug Jones took over the franchise record for saves in a season when he put together the first 35+ save season, finishing the 1992 campaign with 36 saves and a Reliever of the Year Award (the first Astros' recipient). [Note: Record was broken by Billy Wagner, who had 39 saves in 1999, then a still-standing 44 save season in 2003; Jose Valverde tied Wagner's mark in 2008.]

Doug Jones had previously (before being traded to the Astros) become the first Cleveland Indians closer to put together a 30+ save season (37 saves in 1988) and a 40+ save season (43 saves in 1990). Jones actually held three team records for saves in a season in two different leagues at the same time; holding the Astros (NL) record from 1992 through 2001 (Billy Wagner recorded 39 saves, breaking the mark of 36 by Jones), the Indians record from 1988 through 1995 (Jose Mesa recorded 46 saves, breaking the mark of 43 set by Jones in 1990, which broke his own mark of 37 in 1988), and the Milwaukee Brewers record from 1997 through 1999 (Bob Wickman recorded 37 saves, breaking the mark of 36 by Jones).
