Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"The last time a pure home run hitter swung a bat for the Cubs at Wrigley Field, his personality wasn't the question. Ernie Banks' disposition came drenched in sunshine. One-Stroke Magic returned to Wrigley Field this spring in the person of lean and hungry David Arthur Kingman. He is an unquestionable slugging talent with a puzzling psyche marked 'fragile' and sure to be handled with care. The past is his bane." - Hewitt, Brian. Chicago Sun Times Writer. Baseball Digest. July 1978. Page 31.

David Arthur Kingman was a Major League Baseball player with the San Francisco Giants (1971-1974), New York Mets (1975-1977), San Diego Padres (1977), California Angels (1977), New York Yankees (1977), Chicago Cubs (1978-1980), New York Mets (1981-1983), and Oakland Athletics (1984-1986). When Dave, his nickname, made his big league debut on July 30, 1971, he became the first former student from Mt. Prospect High School (Mt. Prospect, IL) to play in the majors.

In 1977, Dave Kingman played for four different teams in four different divisions during the same year. Before Kingman, Frank Huelsman (1904), Willis Hudlin (1940), Paul Lehner (1951), Ted Gray (1955), Wes Covington (1961), and Mike Kilkenny (1972) each played for four different teams in the same season, but Kingman was the first and only player in baseball history to hit a home run with each of the them during that same season.

Not only did Dave Kingman hit a home run with all four teams in 1977, he hit more than one home run with each of the four (Game Logs). Twenty-six home runs in total, nine with the 1977 New York Mets, eleven with the 1977 1977 San Diego Padres, two with the 1977 1977 California Angels, and four with 1977 1977 New York Yankees.

When Dave Kingman hit his first home run as a Yankee in 1977, on September 17, 1977, he had already hit nine with the Mets that same year. That combination made Kingman the first player to homer with both the Mets and Yankees during the same season. A feat that remained unmatched until Chris Young joined Kingman in 2014.

Television broadcaster Al Michaels, during a Monday Night Baseball game in 1986, said, "In a way that is a summation of Kingman's career. He strikes out twice on two bad pitches out of the strike zone and then hits one three blocks away."

The 1962 New York Mets had slugger Frank Thomas on their roster and his 34 home runs during the inaugural season set the single season record home run record for the Mets. Thirteen years later, Dave Kingman broke the team record when he went deep 36 times as a member of the 1975 New York Mets. Not content with his own mark, Kingman broke it one year later by hitting 37 home runs. In 1982, Kingman tied his record (37) and led all National League home run hitters (Top 25), becoming the first Home Run Champion in Mets history.

Dave Kingman hit three home runs in a game five different times during his career! His power was truly, and we mean truly, incredible. Simply watch the video below, his third home run of the day on May 17, 1979, and listen to the description by the broadcaster!

When King Kong hung up his cleats in 1986, he had 442 career home runs, number twenty all-time on the top 1,000 list at that time. In 1992, Dave Kingman only received three votes on the Hall of Fame ballot, 0.7%, removing his name from eligibility and becoming the first player with 400+ home runs not sent to Cooperstown. A popular trivia question was, "name the player with the most home runs not in the Hall of Fame," and Dave Kingman was the answer until Jose Canseco passed him, finishing with 462 home runs in 2001 (eliminated from ballot in 2007), who might eventually be passed by Mark McGwire, finishing his career with 582 home runs in 2001, but still on the Hall of Fame ballot through 2014 (11.0%).
