Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"It was unfortunate that it took the Hall of Fame until 1980, well after his (Chuck Klein) death on March 28, 1958, to recognize his greatness. But no longer does he go unnoticed for his greatness, and the plaque in Cooperstown is testament to that. And in Philadelphia, he will always be remembered as the superstar who had five of the greatest seasons ever produced in baseball history and as the favorite Phillie of 1933." - Mann, Michael Francis. Charles Herbert Klein was a Major League Baseball player with the Philadelphia Phillies (1928-1933), Chicago Cubs (1934-1936), Philadelphia Phillies (1936-1939), Pittsburgh Pirates (1939), and Philadelphia Phillies (1940-1944). Did you know that Chuck, his nickname, in 1933, led all National League (NL) players in home runs, runs batted in, and batting average, earning him the Triple Crownthe first left-handed batter in the NL to win a Triple Crown! Do you remember who his American League counterpart was? [Answer]

Did you know that Chuck Klein was mentioned in several newspapers (Battle Creek Enquirer. 26 July 1929. Page 14.) with the following passage, "Chuck Klein 'Babe Ruth of the National League,' and the sensation of baseball this year, will be the great attraction. He has proven a gate magnet all through the National League this season. He is leading both leagues in home runs, having 30 to his credit thus far. He made a record of three successive home runs in Baker field, Philadelphia, recently, hitting one the last time up one day and the next two in the early part of the next day's game." The Hoosier Hammer did not disappoint the fans and ended the season with a National League leading 43 home runs (Top 25)!

Did you know that Chuck Klein had a National League record 107 extra base hits in 1930, breaking the mark once held by Rogers Hornsby, who "only" had 102 extra base hits in 1922? No NL has broken the extra base hits record set by The Hoosier Hammer, but it was tied in 2001. Do you remember the slugger? [Answer]

Did you know that Chuck Klein, the year before (1932) he put together his Triple Crown season (1933), was a Home Run Champion and Stolen Base King, a truly rare combination of speed & power. How rare? No player since The Hoosier Hammerer has duplicated this feat!

Did you know that Chuck Klein has still-standing single season Phillies records for doubles (59), extra base hits (107), RBI (170), slugging average (.687), and total bases (445)? Those numbers, and several additional marks that have been broken since, prompted the Phillies to induct The Hoosier Hammer into The Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame in 1980.

On July 10, 1936, Chuck Klein hit four home runs in a game, the fourth player in baseball history to accomplish the feat (third in the National League), joining Bobby Lowe (May 30, 1894), Ed Delahanty (July 13, 1896), and Lou Gehrig (June 30, 1932).

CHUCK KLEIN HALL OF FAME PLAQUE

Chuck Klein | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 1980 (HOF)

Chuck Klein was passed-over by the Baseball Writers Association for induction into the Hall of fame, but elected in 1980 by the Veteran's Committee. The Hebrew Hammer went into Cooperstown as a Philadelphia Phillies player, whom he represented in the 1933 All-Star Game (the first ever Midsummer Classic). A year later, Klein played in the 1934 All-Star Game, this time representing the Chicago Cubs, making Chuck the first ballplayer in baseball history to represent two different teams in an All-Star Game.
