Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Pete Ladd: Nicknamed Bigfoot and Sasquatch due to his ample hair and his 6-foot-3, 240-pound frame, Pete Ladd was a sinker / slider pitcher with a herky-jerky delivery who made an unexpected contribution as the Brewers' relief ace after Milwaukee last Rollie Fingers to an injury during the latter part of the 1982 season and for much of 1983. Ladd graduated from Henderson High School in Atlanta prior to attending the University of Mississippi. He also spent two years as a probation and parole officer at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland, Maine." - Ballew, Bill. Author. Peter Linwood Ladd was a Major League Baseball player with the Houston Astros (1979), Milwaukee Brewers (1982-1985), and Seattle Mariners (1986). When Pete made his big league debut on August 17, 1979, he became the first former Henderson High School (Atlanta, GA) student to play in the majors.

Pete Ladd was undrafted out of high school, but Jake Gibbs, a former catcher with the New York Yankees (1962-1971), recruited him to pitch at the University of Mississippi. Ladd was a Rebel for three years (1975-1977), and after winning a team record 39 games, he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the twenty-fifth round of the 1977 Baseball Draft. He was the tenth player drafted out of Ole Miss, their first from that set to pitch in the majors, and the second overall to reach the majors. What infielder preceded him? [Answer]

In 1982, Pete Ladd became the first pitcher, born in the State of Maine, to appear in both a League Championship Series, and a World Series. Prior to that, only three pitchers in baseball history, born in Maine, had appeared in postseason games; Don Brennan (1937 World Series), Carl Willey (1958 World Series), and John Cumberland (1971 NLCS).

Pete Ladd wore #27 while pitching with the Brewers, all four years in Milwaukee, longer than any player had used that number in franchise history, a "record" that was his until Carlos Gómez wore #27 during his fifth season with the Brew Crew in 2014. Pete Ladd died on Friday, October 20, 2023, following a short battle with cancer. He was 67 years old.
