Did you know that Nap Lajoie was named one of the 100 Greatest Cleveland Indians Players ever? As part of the club’s 100th Anniversary Celebration in 2001, a panel of veteran baseball writers, historians and executives selected a roster of the Top 100 Greatest Indians and Lajoie was named one of the nine second basemen.

Did you know that Nap Lajoie was the first American League player to be intentionally walked, while the bases were fully loaded? [Intentional Bases On Balls Records] Do you know who the first player in baseball history this happened to? [Answer]

In 1883, Francis Richter founded The Sporting Life, a weekly magazine devoted to coverage of all sports, with an emphasis on baseball. In 1887, Richter, and other baseball journalists, formed the Base Ball Reporters Association of America, also referred to as the National Base Ball Reporters' Association. And in 1914, Richter wrote the History and Records of Baseball: the American Nation's Chief Sport (Philadelphia: Sporting Life Publishing Co., 1914). In that historic book, Richter selected the greatest players in each position in each decade:

Nap Lajoie | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 1937 (HOF)

Nap Lajoie is one of the most debatable Hall of Fame players in history, not because of his statistical worthiness, but rather how to pronounce his last name! Let the debate exist no longer, Milwaukee Journal, 1903: "Advice to fans: If you want to make Lajoie mad all over, mispronounce his name. But if you mean to make a lifelong friend of the best all-around ball player in the world pronounce his name like this: 'Lash' — as if you had been drinking tanglefoot. Slur the 'h' and be just as dissipated about it as you know how. Then 'you' — ordinary 'you' and 'way'. Now you have it: 'L-a-j-o-i-e' is pronounced 'Lash-you-way', with the accent on the first syllable. Being a guy with a French last name, I know how many different ways it can be said. Heck, I don't even say it the way it should be."
