Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I've probably seen him (Francisco Liriano) with better stuff (then he showed during his no-hitter), but obviously not with the results. He was effectively wild. I guess that's what you call it. So yeah, he's had better stuff, but today he kept pounding it in there and made some big pitches when he needed to, and our defense played great for him." - Anderson, Rick. Minnesota Twins Pitching Coach. Liriano-no! Francisco holds White Sox hitless. Bollinger, Rhett. MLB Staff Writer. 3 May 2011.

Francisco Liriano Casillas was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Minnesota Twins (20052006, 20082012), Chicago White Sox (2012), Pittsburgh Pirates (20132016), Toronto Blue Jays (20162017), Houston Astros (2017), Detroit Tigers (2018), and Pittsburgh Pirates (2019). When Liri, his nickname, made his big league debut on September 5, 2005, he became the first Liceo Americo Pere (High School in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic) graduate to play in the majors!

Francisco Liriano was originally signed by the San Francisco Giants on September 9, 2000, as an international free agent, when he was just sixteen years old. Traded to Minnesota in 2003, Liri won the International League Rookie of the Year two years later, the first Twins' pitcher to ever receive the honor!

Francisco Liriano went 4-1 with a 2.31 ERA in June 2006, striking out 35 batters in 35 innings. The following month, another 4-1 record, a stellar 1.51 ERA, and 55 strikeouts in 41.2 innings of work. His back-to-back American League Rookie of the Month Awards were the first ever by any Twins player, and just the second in baseball history. Do you remember what right fielder, in 2001, was first? [Answer]

Francisco Liriano. on June 11, 2010, struck out seven consecutive batters, tying the Twins record for most hitters struck out in a row, set forty-four years earlier, by Jim Merritt (July 21, 1966)!

Francisco Liriano ended the 2010 season, losing three games in a row, then started the 2011 season with three losses in a row. His 9.13 ERA on May 3, 2011, indicated his struggles — up to that point. Two-hours nine minutes later, Liri had thrown his first career complete game, a 1-0 shutout on the road versus the White Sox, the fifth no-hitter in Twins history, and the first no-no thrown by a visiting pitcher at U.S. Cellular Field!

Francisco Liriano No-Hitter | U.S. Cellular Field | 3 May 2011

Francisco Liriano struggled in 2012, going 3-10 in Minnesota with a 5.31 ERA, then after getting traded to the White Sox (for two minor league players), his ERA increased to 5.40. Off-season surgery on a fractured right humerus, another trade, then a rehab start in the minors, made his comeback difficult to imagine. Liri persevered, winning 16 games with the Pirates, including two complete games, and struck out 163 batters in 161 innings of work, finishing the year with a 3.02 ERA. Liri won the Comeback Player of the Year (GIBBY), Comeback Player of the Year Award (MLB.com), Comeback Player of the Year Award (Player's Choice), AND Comeback Player of the Year Award (The Sporting News)!

Francisco Liriano struck out ten hitters on March 31, 2014, tying the Pittsburgh Pirates record for most strikeouts in an Opening Day game. Those who preceded him were A.J. Burnett (April 1, 2013), John Canderlaria (April 5, 1983), and Bob Veale (April 12, 1965). Two years later, on April 3, 2016, Liri had another 10-strikeout game making him the first Bucs pitcher in franchise history with two 10-K Opening Day performances!

When Francisco Liriano retired he had 1,815 career strikeouts, third most in baseball history (at that time) for a pitcher from the Dominican Republic. His 300 starts were the eighth most, his 112 wins were the eleventh most, and he was one of only three Dominicans with at least 100-career wild pitches!
