José Dennis Martínez was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Baltimore Orioles (1976-1986), Montreal Expos (1986-1993), Cleveland Indians (1994-1996), Seattle Mariners (1997), and Atlanta Braves (1998). Did you know that El Presidente, his nickname, was the first Nicaraguan baseball player (pitcher or positional player) to play in the Major Leagues?

Did you know that Dennis Martinez (245 Wins / Most Overall) is one-of-only-ten twirlers with 200-or-more victories, and no 20-win single seasons? Pitchers in the same "club" include Frank Tanana (240 Wins), Jerry Reuss (220 Wins), Kenny Rogers (219 Wins), Charlie Hough (216 Wins), Mark Buehrle (214 Wins), Milt Pappas (209 Wins), Zack Greinke (205 Wins), Chuck Finley (200 Wins), and Tim Wakefield (200 Wins).

Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal was the winningest Latin pitcher in history, until Martinez won his 244th career game on August 9, 1998, taking over the all-time leader in wins among Latin born pitchers (since broken, in 2018, by Bartolo Colon). However, El Presidente is even better known for his perfect game, the thirteenth in history, pitched on July 28, 1991:

Dennis Martinez Perfect Game (Box Score: 07-28-1991)

Dennis Martinez was in the midst of a splendid streak of nine straight years of 10 or more wins when he took the hill for the NL East's sixth-place Montreal Expos on Sunday July 28 against the NL West's first-place Los Angeles Dodgers.

The clever hurler had licked an alcohol problem five years earlier, and had become one of the big league's top pitchers. He had a 10-6 record as he faced Mike Morgan before a crowd of 45,560 at Dodger Stadium.

Less than 48 hours earlier, the Expos' Mark Gardner had pitched a nine-inning no-hitter against the Dodgers, only to lose that and the game in the 10th inning. Now, it was Martinez' turn, and by the time he was finished, he had, at the age of 36, become the second oldest hurler (beyond Cy Young) ever to fire a perfect game.

In also becoming the first moundsman to toss a complete game no-hitter against the Dodgers at home since 1938, Martinez threw just 96 pitches while striking out five. His defense had few difficult chances as one of Nicaragua's most popular citizens kept the Dodgers off balance with a baffling array of pitches. The Dodgers hit into 17 ground outs.

Morgan was almost as sharp for the Dodgers. He had a perfect game until Ron Hassey led off the sixth with a single. He eventually gave up two unearned runs in the seventh when Martinez reached first on Alfredo Griffin's error and two outs later scored on a triple.

Martinez was in rare form right from the start. He struck out Brett Butler, and got Juan Samuel on a grounder to short and Eddie Murray on a grounder to second in the first inning. Then with one out, he fanned Kal Daniels and Lenny Harris in the second.

Over the next three innings, Martinez induced eight straight Dodgers to ground out. One bouncer, a one-out, fourth inning smash to third by Samuel, was the Dodgers' hardest hit ball. Tim Wallach fielded the ball on the lip of the grass, and threw the runner out at first.

As he faced the next batter, Martinez complained of tightness in his right hip. He was allowed to throw two warmup pitches, then shook off the problem and retired Murray on a grounder to first.

Harris lofted the first fly off Martinez to left to end the fifth. It was one of only four balls hit to the outfield.

Martinez had a close call in the sixth when, with one out, second baseman Delino DeShields fielded Griffin's grounder, but threw low to first. Larry Walker was nearly pulled off the bag, but held on to get the out.

After a perfect seventh, Martinez cruised through the eighth by getting Darryl Strawberry on a grounder to second, Daniels on a strikeout and Harris on a bouncer back to the mound.

In the ninth, Mike Scioscia led off with a fly to Ivan Calderon in medium left field. Pinch hitter Stan Javier then struck out. The final out came when another pinch-hitter, Chris Gwynn, hit a fly deep to center where Marquis Grissom pulled it down.

Martinez had just the fourth modern perfect game in National League history and the first for a Latin American pitcher. He said he dedicated the game to "his people."

His record for the season was 14-11.
