Omar Renán Moreno Quintero was a Major League Baseball player with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1975-1982), Houston Astros (1983), New York Yankees (1983-1985), Kansas City Royals (1985), and Atlanta Braves (1986). Omar wasn't simply fast, he was easily one of the greatest base stealers in the game, an attribute seen by his teammates, his manager, and even when he was scouted in Panama (at age 15)!

The Pittsburgh Pirates may not be objective, but they think Omar Moreno is as good as any center fielder in the league.

His manager, Chuck Tanner, says Moreno is the most underrated player in baseball. Dave Parker, a minor league pal from way back, thinks he's the best center fielder and base stealer in the game.

One of the reasons the Pirates are so loud in their praise of Moreno is that the 26-year-old Panamanian is soft-spoken. He's learning a foreign language and still polishing his baseball talents. Both are improving.

"He's saved so many games for us," Tanner said during a weekend series here. "He's so valuable. To me, he's the most underrated ballplayer in the major leagues."

Pittsburgh Scout Howie Haak, who scours Latin America for prospective major leaguers, saw Moreno's value 10 years ago in Puerto Armuelles, Panama. Moreno was 15 at the the time.

"He couldn't hit the ball out of the infield, but he should could run," Haak recalled.

Moreno had trouble hitting his first two years as a regular with the Pirates, in 1977 and 1978. His combined average was .238. In those years, however, he stole 124 bases, including a major league leading 71 last season.

This season, Moreno has stolen 33 times in 44 attempts, tied for the National League lead. He's hitting .296, four points shy of his self-imposed goal. By the end of July he should have more hits than in either of the two previous years, thanks largely to hitting instruction last fall from former Pirate manager Harry Walker.

Hitting aside, Moreno said his base-stealing technique is still being refined after leading three leagues in that department

"When I site in the dugout, I try to study how they (pitchers) throw," Moreno said. "I watch to see how many times they look over to first. I watch their motion. I watch to see if maybe their leg moves differently on a pitchout. I watch for a pattern. I study pitchers very well.

"I feel right now I can almost steal second 100 percent."

Moreno says he takes the same lead in all situations. "You want to take the same lead whether you're going to not going. Don't let the pitcher know anything. I always slide head-first."

"The fans, they get excited when I get on base. They like to see me run all the time. But I not going to run all the time. I can't say I'm going to run on the fourth pitch all the time. I like to run when I get on base but I have to use my head."

Tanner elaborated: "Speed isn't the only thing. Base-stealing is an art. He's more intelligent in picking up the pitches this year. They've pitched out on him a lot and he's only gone a couple of times. Last year he was caught a lot.

Did you know that when Omar Moreno swiped 71 bases in 1978 with the Bucs, he actually tied the single season team record for stolen bases, set in 1888, "only" 90 years earlier? Do you know whose record he tied? [Answer]

Did you know that Omar Moreno not only broke the all-time Pittsburgh Pirates record for stolen bases in a season the following year, swiping 77 bags in 1979, but he broke it the year after that as well, swiping 96 bags in 1980, a still-standing franchise record?

Did you know that Omar Moreno actually set two still-standing records in 1980 His 96 stolen bases were not enough to lead the National League (Top 25), making it the most stolen bases by any player in baseball history during a season, who did not lead the league!
