Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"The biggest thrill was that I was able to put on a major league uniform for thirty years and to know the players I played with and against. I often have said that my biggest disappointment was that I didn't enjoy it more while I was doing it. I should have enjoyed it more. I had a career that many wanted to have, but I let too many things bother me." - Oates, Johnny. The Baptist Standard. Druin, Toby. Writer. 3 September 2001.

Toby Atwell (1952-1956) hit nine career home runs. Leo Burke (1958-1965) hit nine career home runs. Why did we share this here? Because they were tied for the most home runs hit by a player who played college baseball at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, a mark broken by Johnny Oates, who finished his big league career with 14 homers (since broken by Franklin Stubbs).

Johnny Oates, just two years after he finished playing in the majors, replaced Frank Robinson as manager of the 1981 Baltimore Orioles. After that season, he never had a losing record with the Orioles. In 1996, he became the manager of the Texas Rangers, where he won the American League Manager of the Year Award (1996) and guided them to three Division Series titles (1996, 1998, 1999), the latter two being the first back-to-back titles in franchise history. On August 5, 2005, the Rangers retired his number (#26), on August 7, 2010, he was inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame. On Christmas Eve 2004, Johnny Oates died at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. He was 58-years-old.
