"I pitched around the world, starting in Venezuela, going to the United States, pitching in places like Canada, Japan, and Mexico. All of those experiences made me a better pitcher. A smarter pitcher. I felt like I could enter a game in any situation, and succeed. Funny thing though, I think I was more nervous the second time I made my debut (in 2003) than I was back in '94." - Pulido, Carlos. Baseball Almanac Interview. Where Are They Now: Fifteen Years Later. 9 April 2009.

Carlos Pulido Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Juan Carlos Pulido was a Major League Baseball player with the Minnesota Twins (1994, 2003-2004). Pulido was signed by the Twins in 1989, when he was only 17-years-old. Success in the minors; 3-0 in Rookie League (1989), 6-2 in Double A (1992), 10-6 in Triple A (1993), got him to the majors in 1994, when he was a truly promising prospect. When Pulido made his big league debut on April 9, 1994, he became the first left-handed pitcher from Venezuela to ever take the mound in Twins franchise history – including their time as the Washington Senators (1901-1960)!

Did you know that when Carlos Pulido took the mound on June 12, 1994, during his ninth starting assignment, the opposing pitcher for the White Sox was Wilson Alvarez; making this game the first in major league history where two Venezuelan-born starting pitchers faced each other. The original newspaper story:
Venezuelan Pitching History | 13 June 1994 | Star Tribune | Page 7CBaseball Almanac Research Library
Carlos Pulido had an interesting journey back to the majors, spending the four years (1995-1998) after his debut playing in the minor leagues, a year in China with the Mercuries Tigers of the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL), two seasons (2000-2001) in Japan with the Orix Buffaloes of the Nippon Professional Baseball, before returning to the United States to play in the minors once again.
Carlos Pulido had his contract selected by the Twins on August 20, 2003, and made his first appearance since 1994, nine days later, on August 29, 2003. The 8-year, 356 day gap between appearances was the longest span in major league history since Satchel Paige had a twelve-year gap between 1953 and 1965.
Carlos Pulido posted a 3–8 record with a 5.98 ERA in thirty-two big league games, striking out 47 hitters in 111.1 innings of work. El Domador de Leones (The Lion Tame) also had a VERY successful career in the Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional (Venezuelan Professional Baseball League), playing for the Navegantes del Magallanes, Tigres de Aragua and Cardenales de Lara – 234 games pitched, a 68–51 record, a sparkling 3.08 ERA, and at the time of his retirment, he held the Venezuelan League record for most career wins by a lefthanded pitcher! On Thursday, December 28, 2023, Carlos Pulido died in a hospital in Caracas, Venezuela. He was 52-years-old.
