Phil Rizzuto was born on Tuesday, September 25, 1917, in Brooklyn, New York. Rizzuto was 23 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 14, 1941, with the New York Yankees. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Phil Rizzuto baseball stats page.
"Phil Rizzuto stood only 5 feet, 6 inches tall, but there was no better shortstop in his era. Casey Stengel's 'little fella" was the American League leader in double plays three times. Same goes for total changes. Said starting pitcher Vic Raschi: 'My best pitch is anything the batter grounds, lines or pops in the direction of Rizzuto.'" - Author Ken McMillan in Tales from the Yankee Dugout: Quips, Quotes & Anecdotes about the Bronx Bombers (Sports Publishing, 05/25/2001, Phil Rizzuto, Page 150) [Phil Rizzuto Quotes]

Phil Rizzuto spent thirteen years with the New York Yankees - "the heart of the team on defense is up the middle" (infielder Gil McDougald) - helping the Bronx Bombers win nine American League pennants and seven World Series (1941, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952 & 1953), and helping teammate / outfielder Joe DiMaggio, who said, "The little guy in front of me, he made my job easy, I didn't have to pick up so many ground balls."

Did you know that when "The Scooter" retired, his 1,217 career double plays at shortstop were the second most in baseball history? Do you know who was first? [Answer]
The "answer" to the did you know above was the eleventh greatest shortstop in Major League history, as ranked by Bill James in The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract. Rizzuto was sixteenth, an excerpt:
"...deserved the American League Gold Glove in 1941, 1942, 1946, and 1950, and did deserve the MVP Award which he won in 1950." James further commented about that year saying, "In 1949. everything started to come back together. While every other Yankee regular battled injuries, Rizzuto played 153 games, glueing the Yankee defense together to take Casey's first pennant. By the end of the year sportswriters were once more arguing that Rizzuto was the best shortstop in baseball. In 1950 he was the best player in baseball, at any position."
In 1938, Frankie Crosetti took part in 120 double plays, setting a new record for double plays in a season by a New York Yankees shortstop. In 1950, Phil Ruzzuto turned 123 double plays, breaking The Crow's record, and no shortstop in Yankees history has ever had more!
