"I know how good Joe Jackson and Happy Felsch were in the outfield, but they weren't any better than Eddie Roush. Why Eddie used to take care of the whole outfield, not just center field. He was far and away the best outfielder I ever saw." - Heinie Groh (Lawrence S. Ritter, Glory of Their Times the Story of the Early Days, Holtzman Press Publishing, 1964)

| Edd Roush Stats by Baseball Almanac | ||||

Edd Roush used a 46-ounce Louisville Slugger and claimed he never broke a bat in his big league career! Baseball Almanac likes to take a look "beyond the stats" and we hope you enjoy the following biographical information which appeared in Edd Roush: A Biography of the Cincinnati Reds Star (Mitchell Conrad Stinson, McFarland Publishing, 04/25/2010, Page 20):
Cow Teats and Horsehide
I was borned and raised out here and I've been here ever since. Why in the hell would I go someplace else?
On May 8, 1893, Laura Roush gave birth to twin boys in Oakland City, probably at the family farmhouse just outside of town. The blessed event received passing mention from the "News in Brief" section of a fledgling newspaper called the Oakland City Journal. "Will Roush is practicing a Da-Da song to two new boys." Mama's role went unreported.
The first-time parents chose names that were simple and lyrical - Edd, Fred. Not Edward and Frederick. Edd and Fred. That's why they spelled Edd with two Ds; the second was equivalent to a stop sign. His full name was Edd J. Roush and it would always be a mystery what the middle initial stood for. That's because it stood for the tenth letter of the alphabet, nothing more. He had one grandfather named Joseph and another named Jerry. By selecting "J" from the middle moniker, the Roushes saluted both sides of the family and favoried neither. Fred got the "J' too.
Edd Roush hit .352 in 1921, but lost the batting title to Rogers Hornsby (.397) that season. Edd Roush hit .351 in 1923, but lost the batting title again, to Rogers Hornsby (.384) again. Luckily, Roush had already captured two batting championships, leading the National League in 1917 (.341) and 1919 (.321), the first player from the Cincinnati Reds with two batting titles. Edd was also the first Cincinnati Reds player, whose career was spent primarily in Cincinnati, inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame (1962). His biography in the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame mentions this and his comments about the 1919 World Series:
Edd Roush. Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame. Class of 1960.
(An Excerpt. Full Biography)Roush emerged as the key player in the trade, as he quickly established himself as one of the game's premier hitters and most talented center fielders. In his first full season with the Reds, Roush led the National League in hitting and later fell only two points shy of a consecutive title in 1918. During the Reds' world championship season of 1919, Roush again led the league in batting while also finishing in the league's top five in numerous other offensive categories.
Although Roush's career spanned some 18 big league seasons and earned him a place in Cooperstown in 1962 as the first player to enter the Hall of Fame as a Red, Roush was often most closely associated with the 1919 season and the controversial World Series against the White Sox that followed it.
That eight members of the Chicago club were eventually banned from baseball because of their involvement in a conspiracy to throw the Series is one of baseball's most well-known stories. Often forgotten when this tale is told is the irrefutable fact that, on paper, the Reds of 1919 were every bit as good, if not better, than their American League counterparts. The reason that the White Sox were heavy favorites to win the Series rested largely on the fact that the Sox had won the title two years earlier and the Reds had rarely been contenders since they rejoined the NL in 1890.
Roush insisted throughout his life that the Reds would have won the Series if it had been played squarely. Given the often conflicting versions of what particular Sox players did or didn't do to throw the Series, the extent to which the Sox "gave" the Series to the Reds represents one of baseball's greatest ongoing debates. Two recently published books -- including one by Roush's granddaughter Susan Dellinger -- offer new insights into the events surrounding the Series and are indicative of the ceaseless fascination the event continues to elicit. Regardless of the opinions of fans, writers and historians, Roush was always certain of one thing: The 1919 Reds were better than the 1919 White Sox and deserved the title they won.

Edd Roush | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 1962 (HOF)
Edd Roush never struck out more than twenty-five times in a single season! When he hung up his cleats with 7,363 at-bats, he had only struck out 260 times, number fourteen all-time on the strikeout percentage chart. In 1931, Roush had 376 at-bats, struck out only 5 times, and set the single season record for the franchise [Single Season Leaders for Strikeout Percentage].
