Johnny Schmitz was the National League strikeout champion in 1946. Eight former Chicago Cubs twirlers led the senior circuit before Bear Tracks; Larry Corcoran (1880), John Clarkson (1885, 1887), Bill Hutchinson (1892), Orval Overall (1909), Hippo Vaughn (1918), Grover Alexander (1920), Pat Malone (1929), and Clay Bryant (1938). However, did you know that Schmitz was the first Cubs pitcher in that set of strikeout champions who batted righty & threw lefty?
