Charles Klein Stobbs was a Major League Baseball player with the Boston Red Sox (1947-1951), Chicago White Sox (1952), Washington Senators (1953-1958), St. Louis Cardinals (1958), Washington Senators (1959-1960), and Minnesota Twins (1961). Chuck, his nickname, was a star quarterback at Granby High School (Norfolk, VA) who turned down several scholarship offers after the Red Sox gave him a $50,000 Signing Bonus (a year where Ted Williams annual contract was $65,000).

When Chuck Stobbs made his big league debut on September 15, 1947, he became the fifth left-handed teenage pitcher in Red Sox history, joining Rube Kroh (1906), Charlie Hartman (1908), Babe Ruth (1914), and Jud McLaughlin (1931).

Chuck Stobbs was not just the youngest pitcher, but rather the youngest player in the entire American League in 1947, and 1948! In 1948, Stobbs turned twenty on July 2nd, and was no longer the youngest player in the junior circuit. Do you know was younger that season? [Answer]

On April 17, 1953, Mickey Mantle absolutely crushed a pitch that literally traveled completely out of Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. — it was his thirty-seventh career home run. The pitcher? Chuck Stobbs, who surrendered 184 career home runs, to 102 different sluggers, in 11 different ballparks. Mantle took Stobbs deep eight times, the most by any batter Chuck faced.

Chuck Stobbs tied a unique "record" on May 20, 1956, when he threw one of the wildest pitches in the long history of Briggs Stadium. The ball sailed into the lower box seats to the right of home plate. The Evening Star wrote, "Stobbs explained he lost control of the ball during his windup when his hand brushed his leg. He could feel the ball slipping from his grasp but went through with his motion in order to prevent a balk. Veteran observers said it matched a wild pitch by Phil Marchildon there years ago, which also soared 17 rows deep."
