Jeff Torborg, four years after hanging up his tools of ignorance, took over as manager of the Cleveland Indians. One-hundred fifty-seven wins later, they fired Torborg, but didn't really blame him for the 201-losses, saying in The Cleveland Indians Encyclopedia (Russell Schneider, Sports Publishing, 2005, Page 343), "Conjecture was that Torborg - a milkshake drinker who regularly read the Bible, didn't smoke or chew tobacco, seldom cursed, smiled a lot, and looked young enough to be playing, not managing or even coaching in the major leagues - wasn't 'tough' enough for the job he was undertaking. But that wasn't the problem. More important was the fact that the Indians simply didn't have enough good players."

Being fired by the Cleveland Indians in 1979, opened the door to coaching with the New York Yankees (1979-1988), and serving as manager of the Chicago White Sox (1989-1991, 250-235, 1990 Manager of the Year), manager of the New York Mets (1992-1993, 85-115), manager of the Montreal Expos (2001-2001, 47-62), and manager of the Florida Marlins (2002-2003, 95-105).

Nolan Ryan recalled a career changing moment, "Those two weeks (during the 1972 strike) were very important to me. That park (Boysen Park, Anaheim, California) is where I really started to figure things out. Jeff (Torborg) could see my problems clearer, because he was a catcher and could point things out to me from a different point a view. Torborg remembered those practice sessions as well, saying, "When Nolie overthrew, he was wild up and in on right-handers, which would generally send them flying with their heads going one direction and their helmets another. All we were trying to do was to get him to stop opening up too soon, get behind the ball, and drive it down and away from right-handed hitters."
