Mickey Vernon and President Eisenhower

Mickey Vernon was a two-time batting champion, hitting .353 in 1946 & .337 in 1953. President Dwight D. Eisenhower presented Vernon with a silver bat on April 13, 1954, for winning the battle title, then watched Mickey hit a game-winning home run in the tenth inning off Allie Reynolds of the Yankees. Vernon recalled the moment in The New York Times (Richard Goldstein, 09/28/2008, 'Mickey Vernon, a Star for a Lackluster Franchise, Is Dead at 90', Source), "As I rounded third, I saw some of the players waiting at the plate to congratulate me, and there was one civilian there. As I crossed the plate, he grabbed my arm. 'It’s O.K.,' he said. 'I’m a Secret Service man. The president wants to see you over at his box.' Mr. Eisenhower was standing up with a big grin on his face and his hand outstretched. 'Nice going,' he said."

Ted Williams played from 1939 through 1960, one of only 29 players in baseball history to have appeared in Major League games in four decades, the same years Mickey Vernon played.
