Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"One could almost see Paul and Lloyd Waner leap from the top steps of the dugout and race like a pair of jackrabbits onto the field, their small horse-leather gloves swinging from their hands. Their blue eyes are cat-like, their bodies firm and flowing with energy. It is the kind of energy you feel after a night of Midwestern thunderstorms, when suddenly in the morning you hear the shrieks of kids playing stickball outside in the wheat field, and it is a new game, a new day, something to rush out and embrace like mad. Moving swiftly toward the emerald grass in the outfield, the players look almost identical. One is a little broader in the shoulders, maybe taller, and his smooth face is drawn a bit more tight and fierce. In the outfield they stoop forward, one grabs some grass and tosses it in the wind to check direction, and they both rest their hands on their knees, ready to glide after their quarry." - Clifton Blue Parker in Big and Little Poison: Paul and Lloyd Waner, Baseball Brothers (McFarland Publishers, 12/09/2002, Page 1)

Lloyd James Waner was a Major League Baseball player with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1927-1941, 1944-1945), Boston Braves (1941), Cincinnati Reds (1941), Philadelphia Phillies (1942), and Brooklyn Dodgers (1944). Little Poison, his nickname, had 678 hits over his first three seasons (1927–1929), the most in baseball history. Do you know who has come closest (662 hits during their first three seasons) to that total? [Answer]

Did you know that baseball historian / statistician Bill James (04/01/2008, Freakonimics: The Hidden Side of Everything, 'Bill James Answers All Your Baseball Questions', Source) answered this question, 'Who are ten players in the Hall of Fame that do not deserve to be there,' with, "Fred Lindstrom, Jesse Haines, Tommy McCarthy, Lloyd Waner, George Kelly, Ross Youngs, Roger Bresnahan, Earle Combs, Jim Bottomley, and Chick Hafey"?

Lloyd Waner had 2,459 hits in eighteen big league seasons and his brother Paul Waner, had 3,152 hits (3,000 Hits Club) in twenty big league seasons. Their combined total of 5,611 hits is a record for the most hits by a set of brothers in Major League Baseball. The Alou brothers (5,094) and the DiMaggio brothers (4,853) are the next closest and in both of those instances there was three brothers (Felipe Alou, Matty Alou, Jesus Alou / Vince DiMaggio, Joe DiMaggio, Dom DiMaggio) added together to reach that hit total.

Lloyd Waner Hall of Fame Plaque

Lloyd Waner | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 1967 (HOF)

Little Poison was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1967. His highest vote count by the Writers voting had been in 1962, when he got 23% of the vote, less than Mel Harder, Marty Marion, or Johnny Vander Meer, but more than future hall of famers George Kell and Phil Rizzuto. As you can see by Fast Fact #1, his election is debatable, but he still finished with an impressive .316 career batting average, an All-Star Game in 1938, had four 200-hit seasons (1927, 1928, 1929, 1931), four times a singles leader in the National League (1927, 1928, 1929, 1931), three times an at-bats leader in the NL (1928, 1929, 1931), a NL runs scored leader in 1931, a NL triples leader in 1929, the NL hits leader in 1931 and his 198 singles in 1927 is still the National League record for most singles in a season by a rookie!
