Walt Weiss received 74% of the Baseball Writers votes when they selected the 1988 Rookie of the Year, well ahead of the competition; Bryan Harvey (35%), Jody Reed (34%), Don August (16%), Dave Gallagher (13%), Melido Perez (6%), Mike Schooler (1%), and Cecil Espy (1%). Weiss was the first shortstop to win Rookie of the Year with the Oakland Athletics, who became the first American League team with three consecutive winners - Jose Canseco (1986), Mark McGwire (1987), and Walt Weiss (1988).

Did you know that when the Walt Weiss chose to become a free agent after playing for the Florida Marlins (153 games at shortstop) in 1993, was signed by Colorado Rockies in 1994, and when he took the field that season (110 games at shortstop), he became the first player in baseball history to take the field for both 1993 expansion teams?

Did you know that Walt Weiss, after hanging up his playing cleats, became the sixth manager of the Colorado Rockies (2013-2016), succeeding Jim Tracy (2009-2012), Clint Hurdle (2002-2009), Buddy Bell (2000-2002), Jim Leyland (1999), and Don Baylor (1993-1998)?
