Jack Whillock Journey to the Majors: Whillock played baseball and basketball at the University of Arkansas, where he received his bachelors degree, then was signed to his first professional contract in 1964, by Fred Hawn, a scout with the St. Louis Cardinals. Whillock pitched in their farm system with the Tulsa Oilers, Winnipeg Goldeyes, Cedar Rapids Cardinals, Rock Hill Cardinals, Modesto Reds, and St. Petersburg Cardinals for the next four years, but was released after the 1968 season.
The Tigers immediately signed Whillock, who reported to their Double-A team, the Montgomery Rebels, and after going 5-2, with a 1.19 ERA, and striking out 54 hitters up 53 innings in 1971, he was called-up to the majors!
