Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"At Indiana University, Whitey Wilshere once struck out 57 batters in 22 innings of a doubleheader. In the spring of 1934 the Hoosiers were in Philadelphia to play Temple. With Connie Mack in attendance, Wilshere struck out 18 Owls and was signed by the Athletics. He reported directly to Philadelphia, but saw little action in 1934. Acting on a tip from Jimmie Foxx, in the spring of 1935 Wilshere changed his delivery from sidearm to overhand. In his first start of the season, he threw a 2-hit shutout at the Washington Senators, and by the end of July his record stood at 9-5. But on August 10 he was called into a game before he was properly warmed up. Wilshere felt something in his arm pop, and it was never the same. He saw his last major league action with the A's in 1936 but later spent time with the Yankees and Sox." - Sporting News Publishing Company. Conlon Collection Baseball Card. 1994.

In 1935, Whitey Wilshere took the mound in twenty-seven games, completed seven of them, and threw three shutouts — tied for the most in the American League by a left-handed pitcher!

That same season (1935), Wilshere plunked the most batters (10) in the majors! Did you know that Whitey is the last Athletics lefty, in franchise history — through today, to lead the league in hit batsmen?

When Whitey Wilshere passed away, the first former major leaguer to do so in Cooperstown (New York), The Post-Star wrote the following: "Vernon S. Wilshere. A former professional baseball player for the Philadelphia Athletics, died Thursday (May 23, 1985) at his home. He was 72. A Cooperstown resident since 1953, he was a drive education teacher and baseball coach for the Cooperstown Central School district until he retired in 1980. Prior to 1953 he worked as a salesman for a national firm in Indiana, and was a member of both the Blue Key (a national honor fraternity) and the Theta Chi Fraternity. He entered the Navy in 1942 and received officers training. Mr. Wilshere was born in Poplar Ridge Aug. 3, 1912, the son of Coral and Blanche Sprague Wilshere, and received his early education in Skaneateles schools. He attended Indiana University until joining the Philadelphia team in 1934. He received a master's in education degree from Indiana University in 1939."
