The San Diego Padres Hall of Fame opened its doors in 1999, created that year to honor the club's 30th anniversary, and their inaugural class of inductees included two players, Nate Colbert and Randy Jones. The following year only one received the honor:
Dave Winfield
Dave Winfield jumped directly into the Padres lineup off the University of Minnesota campus in 1973. In eight Padres seasons, he was named to four N.L. All-Star teams (1977-80), led the club in home runs five times (1976-80) and paced the team in RBI six times (1974-75, 1977-80). The team MVP in 1978 and 1979, Winfield batted .284 with 154 homers, 626 RBI and 133 stolen bases for San Diego, the start of a 22-year major league career, which culminated in his election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in January.

Did you know that when Dave Winfield was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on August 5, 2001, his first year of eligibility, he became the first player to ever enter the Cooperstown shrine as a San Diego Padre? [Class of 2001: Bill Mazeroski, Kirby Puckett, Hilton Smith, Dave Winfield.]
Did you know that ESPN Analyst Jeff Marron (Page 2 Staff. The best all-around athletes.) once rated the best athletes ever, of all time, regardless of what sport they chose to play, and Dave Winfield finished third, behind Jim Thorpe and Jim Brown? The write-up for Winfield read, "Winfield could do it all on the baseball field -- hit for power, run (three times he finished in the top eight in triples, and in four seasons he stole more than 20 bases), and field, winning the Gold Glove seven times. Winfield, who played for the University of Minnesota, was the Gophers' best hitter and pitcher, not a shabby achievement considering Minnesota made it to the semis of the 1973 College World Series. After 22 major-league seasons -- he never played in the minors -- Winfield was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2001, his first year of eligibility. But there's more. He was also good enough to play pro basketball, drafted by both the Atlanta Hawks and the Utah Stars after starring as a power forward on Minnesota's Big Ten championship team. And he was such a great athlete that even though he never played a single down in college, the Vikings selected him in the 1973 draft. No other athlete has ever been drafted in all three pro sports."
Did you know that when Dave Winfield went 5-5 on June 24, 1991, he hit a single in the first and sixth innings, a double in the third,, a home run in the fifth, and a cycle-finishing triple in the eighth (off Bill Pecota, an infielder who was appearing on the mound for the first time)? Did you know that Winfield was about four months shy of his fortieth birthday, making him the oldest player at that time to complete a cycle?

Dave Winfield | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 2001 (HOF)
Dave Winfield never played in the minor leagues, going directly from the field at the University of Minnesota to San Diego Stadium (with the San Diego Padres). Baseball Digest mentioned this in an article during the 1980s, along with a few others who had accomplished feat - inspiring Baseball Almanac to create one of our first pages (from 1999) ever, Straight to the Major Leagues.
