Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Q: When did you know that team could do something special? A: For me, it was when some of our other pitchers came through for us. We had the two horsemen (Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling), and we always knew we had a chance to win when they were pitching. When I saw how some of the other guys performed I knew we had something special." - By Bob Young (The Arizona Republic, 10/08/2011, '2001 Diamondbacks Q&A: Tony Womack', Source)

Devon White, centerfielder on the inaugural 1998 Arizona Diamondbacks, stole 22 bases, setting the first team record for stolen bases in a season. One year later, Tony Womack, shattered the mark, stealing 27 bases with the 1999 Arizona Diamondbacks, the most stolen bases in a season by any Arizona Diamondbacks base-thief through today. [MLB.com Sortable Stats]

Tony Womack led the National League in stolen bases three consecutive seasons (1997, 1998, 1999), the tenth senior circuit player to lead the league in three (or more) straight seasons, joining Vince Coleman (1985-1990), Tim Raines (1981-1984), Lou Brock (1971-1974 & 1966-1969), Maury Wills (1960-1965), Willie Mays (1956-1959), Bill Bruton (1953-1955), Kiki Cuyler (1928-1930), Max Carey (1922-1925 & 1915-1918) and Bob Bescher (1909-1912).

Tony Womack spent thirteen years playing Major League Baseball, one season with the New York Yankees, and he described his time in pinstripes in the New York Times (12/22/2004, 'Womack Joins the team he Helped Beat in 2001', Source), "It's one thing to say you've beaten the Yanks, but it's another thing once you join the organization with all its tradition. I don't think there is any player who wouldn't want to look into their family room or trophy room and see a jersey that they wore with pinstripes on it. To me, that is an absolute thrill."

When Tony Womack scored 111 runs in 1999, it was the first (and only) time in his career he reached the 100 runs scored plateau, and, it was the first time any Arizona Diamondbacks player reached the 100-runs-scored plateau as well.
