"Alvis Woods, in his first major league at bat, cleared the right-field fence in the fifth inning with a runner on to give Toronto a 7-4 lead. 'I was just trying to bring in a run,' Woods said. 'It didn't dawn on me until I was in the dugout by the heater trying to get warm that I had hit a home run in my first major-league at bat.'" - Sportswriter Ross Hopkins in The Ottawa Journal (April 9, 1977, 'Blue Jays Hot on cold day', Page 36)

Al Woods Stats by Baseball Almanac |
On April 7, 1977, Al Woods made his Major League debut, pinch hitting for right-fielder Steve Bowling in the bottom of the fifth inning at Exhibition Stadium. White Sox reliever Francisco Barrios threw Woods one pitch, Al decided it looked like a good one, swung-hard, and homered - only the seventh time in American League history where a player making their debut (eleventh overall), pinch-hit homered in their first big league at bat. Did you know that the April 7th game mentioned above also happened to be the first regular season game in Toronto Blue Jays history making Al Woods the first player in team history to:
... wear #20?
... hit a home run in his first Major League at-bat?
... hit a home run with the first pitch thrown to him?
... hit a pinch-hit home run?

In 1979, Al Woods led the American League in double plays by a left-fielder, finishing the season with two, tied for league leader with Oscar Gamble, Steve Kemp, Joe Rudi and Billy Sample. However, Woods also led the junior circuit in errors committed by a left fielder that season with nine, alone at the top, but well behind the National League Leader, Jose Cruz, who had fourteen mishaps for the Houston Astros that same season.
