Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"That space between the white lines — that's my office, that's where I conduct my business. You take a look at the batter's box, and part of it belongs to the hitter. But when he crowds in just that hair, he's stepping into my office, and nobody comes into my office without an invitation when I'm going to work." - Wynn, Early. Early Wynn was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Washington Senators (1939, 19411944, 19461948), Cleveland Indians (19491957), Chicago White Sox (19581962), and Cleveland Indians (1963). Did you know that when Early made his big league debut on September 13, 1939, he became the first Geneva County High School (Hartford, Alabama) graduate to play in the majors? Too easy?

Did you know that Early Wynn, who won his first and only Cy Young Award in 1959 at the age of 39, 22 wins / 179 strikeouts / 3.16 ERA, was the the first Major League pitcher to lead his league in strikeouts in consecutive years with different teams (184 with Cleveland in 1957 & 189 with Chicago in 1958)? It was his fifth 20-win season and one that made headlines (Tuscaloosa News. Reichler, Joe. Staff Writer. 14 August 1959. Page 5.):

Early Wynn Gets No. 16

Few realize just how great a pitcher Early Wynn really is.

Here's a fellow going on 40 enroute to a 20-game winning season. How many pitchers do you suppose have won 20 at Wynn's age? Christy Mathewson? Walter Johnson? Herb Pennock? Bob Feller? Kid Nichols? Iron Man Joe McGinnity? No!

Only two have done it and they rank amont the three or four greatest pitchers even in baseball. Cy Young won 20 when he was 41 and Grover Alexander won 21 at 40.

Early Wynn, 300th Win

Early Wynn 300th Win (Box Score) | The Decatur Herald | July 14, 1963 | Page 1

300 Wins Club Quest: The White Sox released Wynn after his 299th career victory, a complete game against the Washington Senators on September 8, 1962, due to his age (42) and nagging injuries. Teams offered Wynn one-game contracts, seeking to capitalize on his quest for entry into the 300 Wins Club, but Wynn wanted a season-long deal. The Cleveland Indians signed Early on June 21, 1963, and put him in the starting rotation. On July 13, 1963, in his fourth start of the season, Wynn became the 14th member of the 300 Wins Club, but wasn't actually "proud" of that accomplishment (Chicago Times Union. Mooshil, Joe. 6 May 1982. Page 18.) saying, "If I had pitched a good game and gone nine innings, that would be something, but that's not the way it was. I pitched five innings and was ahead 3-2 (actually 5-4). Jerry Walker relieved me and saved the game for me. He was my roommate and pitched like a man possessed. I got a few more starts after that. How many? I don't remember. But I never won another game."

Early Wynn won 300 games (Top 1,000), a Cy Young Award, an ERA Title, two Strikeout Championships, joined the twenty-wins club five times, and was sent to nine All-Star Games, yet had to wait four years before the Baseball Writers' Association of America inducted him into the National Baseball Hall Fame, having received 27.9% of the votes in 1969, 46.7% in 1970, 66.7% in 1971, and just enough to get him in on the 1972 ballot, 76.0%.
