"Michael Young is Michael Young. He has a reputation and I respect that reputation. I know exactly what Michael Young brings. He can bring a lot to us in defending our American League championship. I certainly want him around here...He means everything inside the clubhouse. He's our leader. It's a guy that shows up every day and plays through injuries. He leaves his heart out on the field every day. Michael Young Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Michael Brian Young was a Major League Baseball player with the Texas Rangers (2000-2012), Philadelphia Phillies (2013), and Los Angeles Dodgers (2013). Mike, his nickname had six 200-hit seasons with the Rangers, including five consecutive (2003 through 2007), and finished his career in Texas with 2,230 hits, the only player with 2,000+ hits in Texas — 483 more hits than Ivan Rodriguez, who had the second most career hits in franchise history!
The six-career two-hundred hit seasons are truly remarkable. Here is a list of every Ranger, prior to Young, with a two-hundred hit season: Buddy Bell (1979), Al Oliver (1980), Mickey Rivers (1980), Julio Franco (1991), Rafael Palmeiro (1991), Ruben Sierra (1991) and Alex Rodriguez (2001). Not one of them ever put together more than one two-hundred hit season in Texas, Young had five straight, and a sixth a few years after the streak.
The five-consecutive two-hundred hit seasons are TRULY remarkable as well. Here is a list of every player in baseball history with a streak of five or more consecutive 200-hit seasons: Ichiro Suzuki (2001-2010, 10-straight), Willie Keeler (1894-1901, 8-straight), Wade Boggs (1983-1989, 7-straight), Charlie Gehringer (1933-1937, 5-straight), Al Simmons (1929-1933, 5-straight), Chuck Klein (1929-1933, 5-straight). Every one of them is in the Hall of Fame, except future hall of famer, Ichiro.
Did you know that Michael Young is not only the Rangers leader in hits (see Fast Fact #1), but he also leads the team in all-time games played in Texas (1,823), at bats (7,399), runs scored (1,085 - the only player in team history with more than 1,000), doubles (415 - the only player in team history with more than 400), and triples (55 - the only player with more than 50).
What do Michael Young and Ted Williams have in common? During the 1941 All-Star Game, Ted Williams hit a three-run home run off Claude Passeau in the ninth inning, the first All-Star with a game-winning (A.L. 7 vs N.L. 5) extra base hit during a Midsummer Classic, one out away from losing the contest. During the 2006 All-Star Game, Michael Young hit a two-run triple off Trevor Hoffman in the ninth inning, the second All-Star with a game winning (A.L. 3 vs N.L. 2) extra-base hit, one out away from losing the contest.
