"You don't face (Nolan) Ryan without your rest. He's the only guy I go against that makes me go to bed before midnight." - Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson (Ray, David. Diamond Gems: Life Lessons Between the Lines. Xulon Press Publishers. 25 October 2008. Page 29.)
In 1990, the American League (AL) had a combined total of six no-hit games — the most ever in a single season, in a single league, in Major League history! The most no-hitters in the National League during any single season is five, set originally in 1969, then duplicated in 2014.
The all-time Major League Baseball record for the most no-hitters thrown in any given year was eight, set back in 1884 — before the American League (1901-2024) even existed! There were four no-hitters in the American Association, two in the Union Association, and two in the National League.
In 2021, the one-hundred thirty-seven year old record for most no-hitters thrown during a year was broken, when there were four no-hit games in the American League AND five no-hit games in the National League!
On April 22, 1898, the National League had two no-hit games on the same day, the most ever in a single day of play in Major League history. Nearly one-hundred years later; on June 29, 1990, the Major League record was tied (two in a day), but not the single league record, when two no-hitters were tossed on the same evening, but in different leagues (Dave Stewart, American League, Oakland Athletics, and, Fernando Valenzuela, National League, Los Angeles Dodgers).
Every single American League, National League, Union Association and American Association no hitter (along with seveal hundred box scores) are listed on our pitching menu. Prefer an all-inclusive list? We've got that base covered too!
