A Game for the Ages and a Season to Remember
In a season already filled with remarkable achievements, Shohei Ohtani etched his name into the annals of baseball history once again. On September 19, 2024, Ohtani delivered a performance that will be remembered for generations. The Los Angeles Dodgers’ star became the first player in Major League Baseball history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season, a feat that underscores his unparalleled talent and versatility.
A Night of Unprecedented Achievement
The game against the Miami Marlins was nothing short of spectacular. Ohtani’s performance was a tour de force, as he hit three home runs, stole two bases, and drove in 10 runs, leading the Dodgers to a resounding 20-4 victory. His 5oth home run of the season broke the Dodgers’ franchise record, previously held by Shawn Green, and his 50th stolen base marked a milestone never before achieved in the sport.
Ohtani’s night began with a double, followed by a stolen base that brought him to the 50-steal mark. He continued to dominate, hitting home runs in the sixth, seventh, and ninth innings, each one a testament to his power and precision. The crowd at loanDepot park in Miami witnessed history in the making, as Ohtani’s performance was celebrated with multiple curtain calls.
The Baseball Almanac
Just how spectacular was the game, his performance in Miami, and the impact it had on Baseball Almanac? Here are the updates we made after this one game was played:
- Most Home Runs in a Career by a Player from Japan: Ohtani has held this record for some time, but we had to update it (once again) since he extended the record from 219 to 222 home runs.
- Most Home Runs in a Season by a Designated Hitter in the National League: Ohtani broke the record mid-way through the 2024 season, so we once again had to extend this record, from 48 to 51 home runs.
- 30-30 Club: Ohtani joined two Dodgers, Matt Kemp and Raul Mondesi ,in this elite set of speedy sluggers, and we adjusted his stolen base total, home run total, and games played total.
- 40-40 Club: On August 23, 2024, Ohtani became just the sixth player in history with 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in the same season, another research set that had to be updated in both the stolen base and home run columns.
- 3 Home Runs in a Game: As mentioned earlier, Ohtani slammed three home runs, joining this incredible list as well, but his was noteworthy since he was the first Japanese-born player to ever hit three home runs in a game, AND the first player in baseball history to steal two bases in a game where they hit three home runs.
- 6 Hits in a Game: Going six-for-six in a nine-inning game is rare. How rare? In the entire history of the Dodgers franchise, Ohtani was just the sixth player to join the club, the last was Shawn Green, twenty-two years before!
- 10-RBI in a Game: Since 1876, only seventeen players have ever drove in ten-or-more runs in a nine inning game, Ohtani was the first from the Dodgers.
- 17 Total Bases in a Game: The National League started one-hundred forty-eight years ago, six senior circuit players have ever collected seventeen-or-more total bases in a regulation game, Ohtani joined this set as well!
- Most RBI in a Game by a Leadoff Hitter: Five leadoff hitters in baseball history have driven in eight runs during a game, Ohtani set a new all-time record, driving in a record setting 10 runs, from the leadoff position.
- Los Angeles Dodgers Single Season Home Run Record: Shawn Green held this record since 2001, smashing a franchise record 49 records that year, a mark now held by Ohtani!
The 2024 Season: A Journey of Excellence
Ohtani’s 2024 season has been nothing short of extraordinary. After undergoing elbow surgery last year, he was unable to pitch this season, focusing solely on his role as a designated hitter. This shift allowed Ohtani to dedicate his energy to hitting and base running, resulting in a season that has redefined what is possible in baseball.
Throughout the season, Ohtani’s prowess at the plate and on the basepaths has been on full display. He has consistently delivered clutch performances, helping the Dodgers secure a playoff berth and positioning himself as a frontrunner for the MVP Award. His ability to excel in both power hitting and base stealing has set him apart from his peers, making him a unique and invaluable asset to his team.
A Legacy of Greatness
Ohtani’s achievements this season have drawn comparisons to some of the greatest players in baseball history. His combination of power and speed is reminiscent of legends like Willie Mays and Alex Rodriguez, but Ohtani has taken it a step further by achieving the elusive 50-50 mark. This accomplishment has solidified his status as one of the most versatile and dynamic players the sport has ever seen.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised Ohtani’s performance, calling it “remarkable” and a “win for Major League Baseball”. Ohtani himself expressed gratitude and humility, acknowledging the significance of his achievements and the support of his teammates and fans.
Looking Ahead
As the Dodgers prepare for the playoffs, Ohtani’s historic season serves as a source of inspiration and motivation. His ability to perform at such a high level, despite the challenges of recovering from surgery, is a testament to his dedication and resilience. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see what Ohtani will accomplish next, as he continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in baseball.
In a sport that has seen its fair share of legends, Shohei Ohtani stands out as a true trailblazer. His historic night on September 19, 2024, and his remarkable season have left an indelible mark on the game, inspiring future generations of players to dream big and strive for greatness.
