Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"He (Derek Aucoin) showed me he's become a very mature pitcher. He looked to me like someone in control of a lot of talent. It wasn't 92-mile-an-hour fastballs that were wasted. He allowed guys to hit, but they were off-balance. He kept his pitches down and his slider is tight. It looked to me as though his long arms and huge body were making it difficult for hitters to pick up his pitches." - Montreal Expos Pitching Coach Joe Kerrigan in The Gazette (01/02/1996, Pitcher Aucoin eyes spot with Expos, Page D1)

Derek Alfred Aucoin was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Montreal Expos (1996). When Derek made his big league debut on May 21, 1996, he became the first College Saint-Sacrement (High School) graduate to play in the majors.

Derek Aucoin told the media earlier that same year, "I'm going there to make the club. My whole life I've been battling to achieve this dream and right now we got the opportunity. I'm invited to camp. I'm part of the major-league roster. I think if I have a good camp and show what I'm able to do, there's a job for me. If all my stuff arrives there at the same time as me, you never know what might happened. I'm going there with the attitude that I'm going to make this team." Derek Aucoin made the team.

Did you know that Derek Aucoin was only the second Expos player to wear #66 in a regular season game, succeeding Bryn Smith, who wore it while pitching for the 1981 Expos? Did you know Aucoin was also the last ballplayer to wear ##66 in Expos, as the franchise moved to Washington in 2005?
