Did you know that Ted Cox went 4-for-4 in his Major League debut (September 18, 1977), tying the Record for Most Hits in a First Game. Cox went on to get hits in his first six plate appearances, being featured in a Baseball Almanac research article (A Major League Record Holder), and prompting Don Zimmer (Zim: A Baseball Life. Don Zimmer and Bill Madden. McGraw-Hill Publishing. 01/29/2002) to say:
"Ted Williams had made a statement that (Ted) Cox was one of the best hitting prospects he'd ever seen, and all of a sudden it was as if we had given away the next Rogers Hornsby. It turned out Cox, who was 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, hit only ground balls between first and second. In barely five years in the majors, he hit .245, while (Dennis) Eckersley was my best pitcher in '78, winning 20 games. A few years later, Eckersley re-invented himself as a relief pitcher with the Oakland A's and became one of the greatest closers in baseball history. When Eckersley goes to the Hall of Fame, Ted Cox can at least tell his grandchildren he was once the indispensable player traded for him."
Did you know that when Ted Cox took the field for the Blue Jays on September 9, 1981, he was the first non-pitcher to wear #34 in Toronto?
The game-winning RBI statistic was used in Major League Baseball from 1980 through 1988. It was an official stat credited to the batter whose plate appearance was responsible for bringing his team ahead for the final time in the game. On the first day of the 1980 season, April 9, 1980, two games were played, and Ted Cox recorded the first game-winning RBI in Major League history.

The other American League players to match his feat (4-or-more hits during their Major League debut) for their respective teams are: J.P. Arencibia (Toronto Blue Jays, August 7, 2010), Bill Bean (Detroit Tigers, April 25, 1987), Spook Jacobs (Philadelphia Athletics, April 13, 1954), Ray Jansen (St. Louis Browns, September 30, 1910), Kirby Puckett (Minnesota Twins, May 8, 1984), Wilson Ramos (Minnesota Twins, May 2, 2010), Art Shires (Chicago White Sox, August 20, 1928), Cecil Travis (Washington Senators, May 16, 1933) and Russ Van Atta (New York Yankees, April 25, 1933). The remaining American League teams have not yet had a player go 4-for-4 during the big league debut!
