"Short singles are like left-hand jabs in the boxing ring, but a home run is a knock-out punch. It is the clean-up man of the club that does the heavy scoring work even if he is wide in the shoulders and slow on his feet. There is no advice I can give in batting, except to hammer the ball. Some players steal bases with hook slides and speed. I steal bases with my bat." - Cravath, Gavvy. Philadelphia's Top Fifty Baseball Players. Westcott, Rich. Author. University of Nebraska Publishers. 1 May 2013. Page 69.

Clifford Carlton Cravath was a Major League Baseball player with the Boston Red Sox (1908), Chicago White Sox (1909), Washington Senators (1909), and Philadelphia Phillies (1912–1920). Did you know that when Gavvy, his nickname, made his big league debut on April 18, 1908, he became the first Escondido High School (Escondido, CA) graduate to play in the majors?
Did you know that Gavvy Cravath was a six-time National League home run champion (1913, 1914, 1915, 1917, 1918, 1919), a two time National League RBI champion (1913, 1915), and once tied the still-standing Major League record for doubles in a game on August 8, 1915?
Historian / Author Bill James commented, "A lot of people think that Cravath was the first great power hitter, or the Babe Ruth of his era or something. But Cravath played in a park, the Baker Bowl, which was by far the easiest place in baseball to hit a home run. In 1914, when Cravath led the National League with 19 home runs, he never homered in any other park; all 19 were hit in the Baker Bowl. In 1918, same thing; Cravath led the National League in home runs with 8, but all of them were at home. Cravath in his career actually hit fewer home runs in road games (26) than Nellie Fox (30)."

On June 22, 1912, Gavvy Cravath hit a triple in the fourth inning off the Brooklyn Dodgers starting pitcher, Eddie Stack. After a call to the bullpen, Cactus Cravath came to the plate again, still in the fourth inning, tripled again (off reliever Earl Yingling), and became the first Philadelphia Phillies player to hit two triples in the same inning — a hitting feat that has not yet been matched in franchise history through today!
