Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"When I look back on my career, I think about perseverance, and someone who had average talent, but I was able to make the most of it. I learned how to be a part-time player, and that's probably one of the reasons I became a decent pinch hitter. A lot of guys who don't accept that role, they're not good pinch hitters. I remember a big game-winning hit in Chicago, a pinch-hit home run that won the game and Tug McGraw was our winning pitcher, so he took me out for a great steak dinner afterwards." - Hutton, Tom. October Baseball: Ballplayers Discuss Postseason Play. Zachofsky, Dan. Author. McFarland Publishing. 27 July 2010. Page 106.

Thomas George Hutton was a Major League Baseball player with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1966, 1969), Philadelphia Phillies (19721977), Toronto Blue Jays (1978), and Montreal Expos (19781981). When Tommy, his nickname, made his big league debut on September 16, 1966, he became the first South Pasadena High School (South Pasadena, California) graduate to play in the majors. Twenty years later, they had their second big leaguer. Remember who it was? [Answer]

Bill Bergen played in 947 games, from 1901 through 1911, and became the first player in baseball history with 900-or-more games played, and not one time was he hit by a pitch. In 1966, Hutton broke Bergen's record, appearing in 952 games, without a single hit by pitch, the most by a non-pitcher in baseball history until Mark Lemke broke Tom's record in 1998!

Did you know that Tommy Hutton was released by the Montreal Expos on August 8, 1981, but entered the Expos broadcast booth the following year and remained their until 1986? Hutton then moved from one broadcast booth to another, doing commentary for the New York Yankees (1987-1989), Toronto Blue Jays (1990-1996), and finally taking over as the color analyst for the Miami Marlins — a position he started before the 1997 season and one he took over from Gary Carter (1993-1996). When ownership of the Marlins franchise changed in 2015, Hutton retired from the broadcasting booth when his contract was not renewed, ending a 19-year relationship with the franchise. Hutton never won a World Series ring as a player, but the Marlins gave him two for their world championship wins during the 1997 and 2003 World Series.

Tom Seaver pitched for twenty-years in the majors, won 311 games, threw 231 complete games, and recorded 61 shutouts. Opposing hitters were only able to hit, on average, .226 against Seaver! Hutton faced Tom Terrific several times (62 plate appearances), and took him deep three times, was walked 11 times, and hit .320 against The Franchise!
