Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"(Hal) McRae was a better player than some of the Hall of Fame left fielders. He hit .300 five times as a regular, plus a couple of times as a part-time player, he hit a huge number of doubles and 14-27 home runs a season, drove in 133 runs when he was 36 years old, and had over 2,000 major league hits. McRae was the most aggressive baserunner of the 1970s, a man who left home plate thinking 'double' every time he hit the ball." - Author Bill James in The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract (Free Press Publishing, 06/13/2003, #53. Hal McRae | Top 100 Best Left Fielders, Page 688)

Harold Abraham McRae was a Major League Baseball player with the Cincinnati Reds (1968, 1970-1972) and Kansas City Royals (1973-1987). Hal, his nickname, won a Silver Slugger Award in 1982, the first Royals designated hitter to receive the honor! Thirty years later, the next DH from Kansas City won — who was it? [Answer]

The Outstanding Designated Hitter Award (Edgar Martinez Award) is presented annually to the most outstanding designated hitter (DH) in the American League. When Hal McRae won in 1976, he became the first Kansas City Royals player to receive the honor. When he won it again in 1980, he joined Willie Horton as the only two two recipients. And when McRae won it a third time in 1982, he became the first three-time winner, a feat not duplicated until 1998. Do you know who tied Hal that season? Clue: His nickname was Gar. [Answer]

Hal McRae hit an American League leading fifty-four doubles in 1977, absolutely obliterating the single season Royals' record for doubles, held previously by Amos Otis, who had forty doubles in 1976. McRae's 54 doubles are still the most ever hit in Kansas City through today!

How rare was his 50+ doubles season? Hal McRae was one of only two players across the entire decade of the 1970s (1970-1979) to leg out fifty doubles during the same season, Pete Rose was the other member of the "I'm thinking two every time I leave the box" club.

Did you know that Hal McRae, in 1977, was one-of-two Royals players to take the field in ALL 162 games, a franchise first? The team record McRae & Al Cowens broke was set originally by Paul Schaal (161 games played in 1971) and tied once by John Mayberry (161 games played in 1976). Did you know Hal's son, Brian McRae, also played in the majors and broke in with the 1990 Royals?
